Temple History

The Veppil-Erakkil Sree Mahalakshmi Bhadrakali Kshethram is steeped in ancient spiritual traditions and holds a significant place in the religious landscape of Kerala. The temple's history spans centuries, with its origins tracing back to times when sacred worship practices were deeply rooted in the community. The Prathishta (consecration) of the main deity was performed by the legendary Kooru Aashan, a direct disciple of the great spiritual leader Sree Narayana Guru, whose influence shaped the spiritual consciousness of Kerala. This unique combination of Mahalakshmi and Bhadrakali worship makes it an exceptional temple worthy of pilgrimage and devotion.

The temple's sacred rituals and ceremonies are guided by Kannan Thanthri from Kodungallur, who serves as the Thanthri (chief priest and spiritual authority) of the Kshethram.

Veppil & Erakkil Families

Bonded by Blood, United in Faith

The Veppil and Erakkil families share a common ancestry, their roots intertwined through generations of blood relations. However, like many family histories, theirs too bears the marks of human frailty - an ancestral disagreement born of ego led to their separation into two distinct family names.

For years, what was once one family lived as two, each carrying forward their own traditions while worshipping at the same sacred grounds of Sree Mahalakshmi Bhadrakali Kshethram.

But the divine has a way of healing what humans break. Through the grace of Sree Mahalakshmi and Sree Bhadrakali, and the wisdom of successive generations, the wounds of the past have been mended. Today, the Veppil and Erakkil families stand together once more - not just as relatives by blood, but as a unified family in spirit and purpose.

This temple stands as a testament to that reunion. It is more than a place of worship; it is a symbol of reconciliation, forgiveness, and the enduring strength of family bonds. Here, under the benevolent gaze of our deities, two branches have rejoined to become one tree once again.

The Sree Mahalakshmi Bhadrakali Kshethram is lovingly maintained and administered jointly by both families, who work hand in hand to preserve our sacred traditions and pass them on to future generations - united, as we were always meant to be.
